Process Paper
The topic chosen by us was, “Italy’s Impact on World War II.” The topic was chosen because our group members wanted to research a subject that could be considered new and original by our audience. At the same, we wanted to complement our research with the input of a primary source that could be accessible to a person to person interview. Our entire group met on several occasions to discuss the details of the project and the distribution of the work. While in one of these meetings, we discuss various possible subjects and learned that one of our group members, Gianfranco de Castro, has a great aunt that lived in Italy during World War II. Gianfranco’s great-aunt personally witnessed many of the horrid events and has spent most of her life documenting her recollections of the events that took place during this grave era. Our group unanimously agreed to research the topic, “Italy’s Impact on World War II.”
The research was divided and assigned throughout the members of the group. First and foremost, Gianfranco handled the interview with his great-aunt. Since the interview with Gianfranco’s great-aunt, Zaira Majonica, reflected her personal points of view and recollections of the time, we had to keep her information separate from our formal research to maintain objectivity and the integrity of the information surrounding the events. Roberto Fernandez handled Italy’s economic impact. Carlos Tramonte handled Italy’s military impact. Ferran Rivas handled Italy’s political impact. Finally, Gianfranco handled the interview, Italy’s Social and Geographic impact, formatting of the website, bibliography and this final document
Our group decided that a website would be most suited media for our project because it makes it easier to organize the large quantity of information gathered and we all have previous experience in the creation of a website during last year’s History Fair competition. In addition, we decided to format the website 10 different sections by area of interest: An introduction to the Project; a WWII Background that includes both research and primary source information; the main protagonists, Hitler and Mussolini; the biography of our primary source, Zaira Majonica; recollections by our primary source; economic impact; military impact; political impact; social and geographical impact; and bibliography.
Our topic relates to the National History Day theme, “Turning Points in History,” very well. Italy’s impact on World War II greatly changed the course of history. Many battles within World War II may have not been fought; others could have had a different outcome. The Allies could have still won the war, or the Axis Powers, Nazi Germany, could have taken control of the world. Italy’s involvement in the war greatly affected history for good or for bad.
